Popeye the Sailor is an American animated series of comedic, theatrical cartoon shorts started in 1933 by Max and Dave Fleischer's Fleischer Studios and based on the comic strip character created by E.C. Segar. The shorts tend to revolve around a villain, usually Bluto, making a move on Popeye's "sweetie," Olive Oyl. Popeye defeats his foe with his signature move of eating spinach to gain superhuman strength. In addition to becoming iconic within mainstream public consciousness, the majority of 231 Popeye short subjects are highly acclaimed by animation historians and fans.

2:00 PM

2 and 8pm

The Kelsey Theatre at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) and the Pennington Players kick off the New Year with the popular, fun and risqué British comedy "Calendar Girls" — a true story based on the lives of eleven extraordinary Women's Institute ladies who pose nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund.

"Calendar Girls" first opened at England's Chichester Festival Theatre and thereafter embarked on a national tour. Since that time, it has become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. The story of "Calendar Girls" begins when John, who shortly after being diagnosed with lymphoma, passes away. His wife Annie and her friends resolve to create a "nudie" calendar to raise money to buy a settee for the hospital waiting room. To everyone's surprise, the calendar attracts a torrent of international attention and the group's new-found fame threatens a close friendship.

8:00 PM

Over the course of 25 years and ten albums, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist, John Magnie, The Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band’s substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée, for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass. Their music features an intoxicating blend of passionate, joyous roots music, not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any musicians. More than a just a concert, the “dudes” leave you feeling like they’re having a party and you were lucky enough to be invited.
